The United Nation’s World Food Programme scales up participation in the R4 Rural Resilience Initiative by 60 percent in 2018

During 2018, in the 6 countries where the R4 Rural Resilience Initiative (R4) operates, the number of participants increased by 60 percent from the previous year, with the largest growth coming from Malawi, thanks to a significant contribution from the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID).

The expansion of the World Food Programme’s (WFP) R4 Rural Resilience Initiative (R4) continued throughout 2018, with a 60 percent increase of participants across the 6 countries implementing R4. This highlights the progress made in mainstreaming the integrated risk management model into WFP’s country programmes, enabling vulnerable rural households to increase their food and income security in the face of increasing climate risks.

R4 currently reaches over 93,000 farmers (benefitting approximately 465,000 people) with a total sum insured of US$ 10.3 million in Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Senegal, Zambia and Zimbabwe, with expansion of the R4 model underway or being planned in at least 8 countries. R4 will continue innovating and implementing programmes that help vulnerable populations access the insurance products that best fit participants’ needs across various regions and countries, scaling up insurance under the InsuResilience Global Partnership.
