G20 Expert Workshop on climate risk pooling in Berlin

Berlin, 21 March 2017 – On March 21, 2017, G20 delegates and experts convened at a Joint G20 Expert Workshop on “Resilience, Climate Risk Insurance and Climate Finance” in Berlin. The workshop, which took place back-to-back with the G20 Sustainability Working Group (SWG) meeting on March 22-23, gathered around 150 participants from all G20 member states to discuss key topics in climate and energy policy.

Climate risk insurance plays an important role. The workshop examined insurance as an innovative solution for comprehensive climate risk management. Insurance schemes can help to protect people, livelihoods and assets, and incentivize disaster risk reduction. In a keynote and two panel discussions, participants identified key lessons learned from existing sovereign disaster risk pooling and financing mechanisms, and explored the role of the G20 to use opportunities and address challenges for climate and disaster risk finance and insurance solutions.
